A tornado is a rapidly rotating column of the air that spins while in contact with both the surface of the earth.

WEATHER DURING THE STORM

  • A tornado is a column of air that extents from the base of a thunderstorm to the ground

CAUSES

  • The intense spinning of a tornado is partly the updraft and downdraft of the thunderstorm

LOCATION AND TIMING

  • In Southern states, tornado season is typically from March to May. In the Southern Plains, it lasts from May to early June. On the Gulf Coast, tornadoes occur most often during the spring. And in the Northern Plains, Northern states and upper Midwest, peak season is in June or July.

SAFTEY PRECAUTIONS

  • An overpass as tornado shelter can put people at a greater risk of being killed or seriously injured by flying debris from the powerful tornado winds

SEVERITY OF THE STORM

  • A watch does not mean that the severe weather is actually occurring
  • Tornado warnings are issued by the local National Weather Service office when any of the following occurs
