Tourette’s

No Description

PRESENTATION OUTLINE

HOW DO DOCTORS DIAGNOSE?

  • Usually this disease is self-diagnosable around the age of five
  • Many who have this disease describe it as happening almost over-night with the next morning they gain their first tic
  • The ages most affected are ages five to thirty five

SYMPTOMS

  • The behavioral symptoms include compulsive behavior, impulsivity, hyperactivity, meaningless repetition of own words, nonsense word repetition, repetitive movements, swearing uncontrollably, or lack of restraint
  • The muscular symptoms are tic, difficulty with bodily movements, increased muscle activity, involuntary movements, involuntary muscle contraction, or jerking muscle spasms
  • The mental symptoms may include anxiety or depression

TREATMENT

  • There are many different treatments which include....
  • Self Care: relaxation techniques
  • Medications
  • Seeing specialists like a therapist

MOTOR TICS

  • These are tics that are not vocal and are uncontrollable body movements
  • These tics can be a range of different things like eye blinking, facial grimacing, jaw movements, head bobbing/jerking, shoulder shrugging, neck stretching, and arm jerking
  • There is even a tic known as a paralysis tic where the person suddenly becomes unable to move for a couple of minutes

VOCAL TICS

  • An example of vocal tics are sniffing, throat clearing, grunting, hooting, and shouting
  • Complex vocal tics are words or phrases (usually curse words but not always)

WHAT IS IT LIKE TO TIC?

  • Many people do not understand how someone can randomly shout out a word a phrase and not simply just “hold it it.”
  • People with Tourette syndrome describe a tic as an itch you really need to scratch and the longer you don’t get it, the worse it gets.

WHAT IS IT LIKE AS AN ADULT?

  • Although Tourette syndrome up to 6 to 20 percent of children, the tics do not tend to carry over into adult hood
  • Although there are some adults who tic a lot more as they get older, a majority of them see drastic improvement as an adult (although on 8 to 10 percent of adults see complete remission)

WHY DO SOME PEOPLE HAVE TOURETTES?

  • The cause of Tourette syndrome is unknown with doctors knowing very little about why a person might tic and how to prevent it.

CONCLUSION

  • Overall people find this disease to be very funny at times but it is certainly not funny to the person who has it
  • We should be more accepting of the people with this disease and instead of laughing at them, we should simply treat that like we would if they did not have this disease
