What is it?

  • Red Algae Bloom
  • Recent blooms have been larger and a more common occurence.
  • Toxic, causing a seafood ban.
  • However, store bought seafood is fine since it is regularly tested.
  • these blooms are a natural occurence.
  • Toxicity is attributed to human activity. pollution.

Where? When?

  • Red tides have been found from Mexico to Alaska.
  • Algae is a seasonal thing. Red tides have been blooming for years, the toxicity has only been notable for the past 40 or so years.

Environmental effects

  • The algae has had a significant effect on filter feeders and shellfish.
  • Making them unsafe for human consumption.

Solutions?

  • Currently, scientists are trying to track and predict future red tides.
  • Clay Flocculation is a possible solution. But not for long term applications.
