  • This book and hatchet are both about survival
  • The characters both change over the story
  • In both books the characters have to kill animals to survive
  • They both have to do certain things the day when they wake up
  • They also both have the same author

SETTING

  • The setting of this story is at John's house
  • In the woods where he hunts and swamp
  • The barn where he does his chores
  • The time in which this book is taking place is about modern time
  • The impact it has on the story is it is cold.That means it's easier to get tired and that makes it harder to touch the deer

CHARACTERS

  • The protagonist name is John he is a boy who has to live with his grandparents because his mom and dad died
  • His grandfather' name is Clay he has taught Brian how to hunt and has cancer so he can't hunt its Brian this year
  • His grandmother' name is Agatha she has helped on their farm and has cooked food for John and Clay
  • Emil is John's friend. He doesn't like to do chores and is sad also,that John's grandfather doesn't have a long time to live because of cancer

CONFLICT

  • The main conflict in this book is that John's grandfather has cancer and has only a little time to live
  • The conflict with nature is it is very cold and that can made John very wiry when he was running the deer down

PLOT

  • John is a boy who has to live with his grandparents because his mom and dad died. John has to hunt alone this year because his grandfather has cancer and doesn't have long to live
  • John has a dream about a deer. Later while John is hunting he sees a deer and finally has a good shot to take it but he doesn't because of the deer in his dream he decides that he will run down the deer and touch it
