Comparing Traditional Irish Culture to Modern Irish-American Culture

TRADITIONAL IRISH FOODS

  • They ate mostly things that come from cows.
  • Like milk, butter, cheese, and buttermilk
  • The richer people got to eat the meat from the cows
  • Potatoes were a main staple of the Irish diet
  • They also ate pork

MODERN IRISH-AMERICAN FOODS

  • Lots of fish and bread(it's the staple of our diet)
  • Large pots of food that you eat for at least a week
  • Like spaghetti, chili, and chicken n' dumplings

TRADITIONAL IRISH MUSIC

  • Most traditional Irish songs were hymns, poems,
  • drinking songs, ballads, laments, reels, horn pipes, and jigs
  • Reels, horn pipes, and jigs are all dancing songs
  • An Instrument used in a lot of traditional Irish music is the harp

MODERN IRISH-AMERICAN MUSIC

  • My family and I listen to a lot of different types of music.
  • Like Bluegrass, Classic Rock, Jazz, Blues, and Big Band Music from the 40s
  • We also at some point all learn to play an instrument
  • Or at least attempt to
  • We tend to learn instruments like guitar, piano, trumpet, and accordion

  • They had mostly Christian schools until 1831
  • In 1831 they made a unified education system.

  • Softball

MODERN IRISH-AMERICAN EDUCATION

  • Go to school from Kindergarten to 12th grade
  • You have to graduate or you are shamed from the family
  • Also considered shameful if you don't at least try to go to college

TRADITIONAL IRISH HOLIDAYS

  • A mix of Pagan customs and Christian traditions
  • They have holidays like St.Patrick's Day, Christmas, and Easter
  • They use to have holidays like Samhain, Lunasa, and Bealtaine

MODERN IRISH-AMERICAN HOLIDAYS

  • Similar Christian traditions of Christmas and Easter
  • We also celebrate Thanksgiving
  • We celebrate a variation of Samhain(a very obscured version of it); Halloween
