THE NATIVE AMERICANS STILL LEGALLY CONTROLLED SOME LAND

The natives tried their best to try to fit in with the white settlers.
THE LOUISIANA PURCHASE
IN 1803, THE U.S. PURCHASED A HUGE AMOUNT OF LAND FROM FRANCE
This purchase gave the settlers a opportunity to force the native Americans out west to the land bought in the Louisiana purchase.
IN 1828, GOLD WAS DISCOVERED ON CHEROKEE LAND
THIS SERVED AS A MOTIVE TO HAVE THE INDIANS REMOVED FROM THEIR LAND.
IN 1830, ANDREW JACKSON SIGNED THE INDIAN REMOVAL ACT
THIS ALLOWED THE GOVERNMENT TO NEGOTIATE LAND TREATIES WITH THE NATIVES.
In theory, this sounded like a good idea, but the native Americans were pretty much forced into signing unfair treaties.
THE 10 YEAR WAR
THE SEMINOLE TRIBE ENDED UP FIGHTING A 10 YEAR WAR WITH THE U.S. ARMY.
As a result of the stubbornness of the Seminole tribe, they ended up fighting a 10 year war against the U.S. army, causing many Seminole deaths.
ROUTES THAT THE INDIANS TOOK
THE NATIVES TOOK MANY DIFFERENT ROUTES. SOME EVEN TRAVELLED BY STEAMBOAT
HOW THE TRAIL OF TEARS GOT ITS NAME
A CHOCTAW CHEIF DESCRIBED IT AS A TRAIL OF TEARS AND DEATH
THE CHEROKEE BROUGHT THEIR CASE TO COURT
THE CHEROKEE PEOPLE PEACEFULLY REVOLTED AND BROUGHT THEIR CASE TO COURT
The Cherokee case went all the way up to the Supreme Court and eventually won, but by that time it didn't matter because the treaty of New Echota had already been established.
THE TREATY OF NEW ECHOTA
THIS TREATY SOLD ALL OF THE CHEROKEE LAND FOR $5 MILLION
THE CHEROKEE REMOVAL
ON MAY 17, 1838, THE U.S. ARMY FORCED THE CHEROKEE OFF THEIR LAND AT GUNPOINT.
MANY PEOPLE DIED IN THE CAMPS
THE MAIN CAUSES OF DEATH WERE STARVATION, SMALL POX AND PNEUMONIA

A FEW THOUSAND OF THE CHEROKEE WERE LOADED ONTO STEAMBOATS TO MAKE THE JOURNEY BY RIVER

IN 1987, CONGRESS CREATED THE TRAIL OF TEARS NATIONAL HISTORIC TRAIL
