Basic Information

  • Took place during 1838-1839
  • Andrew Jackson was president when he made an Indian removal policy
  • The migration was forced, and took place within present day USA
  • The Ridge (East Cherokee leader) led them on their journey.

Problems and Difficulties

  • Hunger
  • Disease
  • Exhaustion
  • Death (4,000)

Surviving the New Area

  • Met up with West Cherokee tribe
  • Present day Oklahoma 
  • Women were warriors and leaders of the house
  • Men were hunters, and brought home timber.

Discrimination

  • 'Rule of Cotton'
  • Only white was free in American territory

The Old Country

  • Land was sold by lottery

New Country

  • Cherokee addressed letter to government
  • Happy to be reunited with their sister tribe
  • They will live well and happy.
