WHAT IS IT?

  • Network of tracks covering a continental landmass
  • Has terminals at different oceans and continental borders

POSITIVE EFFECTS

  • Faster and larger amount of goods ship faster
  • Cheaper for travel and safer than wagons or stagecoach
  • Help unpopulated areas get settled easier

NEGATIVE EFFECTS

  • Natives lost their land
  • Natives move into reservations
  • Brought a lot of western settlers take over native lands
  • Tons of buffalo were killed for sport on trains

PACIFIC RAILROAD ACTS

  • There were many passed
  • Government order than public land can be used to build railroads on
  • Most land were Native American territories

WORKERS

  • Mostly Irish immigrants and Cantonese workers
  • Chinese workers made up at least 80% of workers in the Central Pacific Force
  • Chinese workers accepted labor at a cheaper pay
