When they combine with other atoms, they lose either one or both electrons.
They can also loose an electron from the outermost energy level.
They can share electrons when they form bonds with other atoms.

Gold is used as a base for the money system and coins.
Silver is used as an electric conductor.
They are both used for jewelry and dentistry.

Cobalt is used for magnets and heat resistant tools.
