Illnesses

  •  Number one killer in the trenches.
  •  Trench Foot, Trench Mouth, Trench Fever, Dysentery, Typhus, Cholera.
  • Lethal illnesses were mistaken for more innocuous ones.

Wounds

  • Soldiers always had some type of wound.
  •  Blighty Wound - Wound that could send you home.
  • Minor wounds could often become infected and kill. 
  • Today's antibiotics were not discovered, so many soldiers died.
  • Truces were initiated to recover the wounded and bury the dead. 

Shell Shock

  • Psychological damage.
  • Known today as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
  • Symptoms included fatigue, irritability, and headaches.
  • Sufferers refused to follow orders, committed suicide, or deserted.
  • Punishments ranged from court-martials to execution.

Self-inflicted wounds

  • Many hoped for "blighty wounds".
  • Some shot themselves.
  • Some commit suicide or let enemy kill them.
  • Major crime that could end in execution.

Death

  • Illness
  • Shot by enemy.
  • Enemy gas.
  • 10% of soldiers died.
