If you were to lay all the trenches built in WW1 end to end, they would be around 25,000 miles long

They were around 12 feet high and built right into the ground.

Water often collected at the bottom of the trench, so boards were placed there, called “Duckboards"

Trenches were definitely not the ideal living place.

Many diseases plagued them. Trench foot, cold and trench fever were all common there, along with rats, lice and frogs.

Trenches were always in need of repair, so soldiers would take turns repairing and digging new trenches.

Trenches also had many layers and levels, they certainly were not dug straight. Usually they were more zigzag like.

Most trench systems were built in France and Belgium

Trenches were used by both sides to fight more safely, though with new inventions such as gas which could be released through trenches, it wasn't much safer.

Because trenches were dug into the ground, neither side could easily gain much territory during the whole war, Oct 1914- Nov 1918
