SOMETIME IN THE 1960s....

  • The Rosebud-Sioux tribe founded the first ever Tribal EMS service in the United States
  • Started out with roughly 23 nurse trained "medics"
  • Only 3 vehicles to respond to emergencies
  • In its primitive years, funding was hard to find and equipment even more difficult to
  • come by.

50 YEARS OF DEVELOPMENT...

  • Since starting out as a mostly volunteer service,
  • With little equipment and even less respect from the outside medical community
  • This Tribal EMS service has grown into a forward thinking, modern day protocol provider
  • With access to better technology and continuing education opportunities.
  • Unfortunately, so many Native EMS services were (& a few still are) are lacking in

  • When working on a reservation, often the seclusion from the outside world
  • Can be to blame.
  • On reservations, access to trauma facilities can be limited, depending on location
  • Some Reservations are lucky enough to have a bird in the area, other wise they

  • And subsequently transfer that patient 500 miles to the nearest hospital.
