The tsunami occurred on the 26th of December in 2004. That would mean this happened exactly after Christmas. Everyone in Indonesia would be devastated after a very exciting event that has happened before the tsunami hit.

How was it caused?

The Sumatra tsunami was mainly caused by the 2004 Indian Ocean underwater earthquake, also called the Sumatra-Andaman. It happened on December 26, 2004. The epicentre of the earthquake was off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. At first, the earthquake was measured as a 9.0 on the Richter scale.

A Richter scale is a scale that measures how big a earthquake is. Later, scientists said it was as high as a 9.3. The earthquake also was the longest ever recorded. It lasted between 8.3 minutes - 10 minutes. It was so powerful that it caused the entire Earth to vibrate. It started other earthquakes as far away as Alaska.

Could the Sumatra tsunami been avoided?

YES

If they had tide gauges installed, many of these people that were farther away from the epicentre or near the epicentre could have been saved. They would have survived because they would have been able to track the waves. They would have told the people along the coast area to move off the beach and give them an approximate time before the waves were going to hit.
