WHAT IS A TSUNAMI ?

  • A Tsunami is a wave caused by earthquakes or undersea volcanic eruptions.

HOW AND WHY TSUNAMIS HAPPEN

  • It is caused by sudden movement in the ocean floor. Such as an earthquake, a powerful volcanic eruption, or an underwater landslide. The impact of a large meteorite could could cause a Tsunami.

WHERE DO TSUNAMIS OCCUR

  • Tsunami occur most often in the Pacific Ocean and Indonesia Ocean. Because the pacific rim bordering the ocean has a large number of active submarine earthquake zones. However, tsunamis have also occurred recently in the Mediterranean Sea region and are expected in the Caribbean Sea as well.

FUN FACTS ABOUT TSUNAMIS

  • A tsunami is a series of waves called a wave train.
  • 283000 people died in the 2004 tsunami.
  • Palm trees with there long, bare trunks are well adapted to life on shore and often survive tsunami intact.
  • A Mega Tsunami is a tsunami with extremely high waves and is usually caused by a landslide. A Mega Tsunami occurred at Lituya Bay, Alaska in 1958, creating the tallest tsunami ever recorded at 1700 feet high. Miraculously only to people died.
