WHAT IS TUDOR/ELIZABETHAN ENGLAND?

  • Time period between 1485 and 1603 in England and Wales
  • Queen Elizabeth I was the ruler at the start of the time period
  • England started to emerge as a lead naval and commercial power

POVERTY LIFE

  • Non-luxurious life for non-monarchs and the unwealthy
  • Government tried to help the poor
  • Divided the poor into three categories

POVERTY LIFE: HELPLESS POOR

  • Category included the old, sick, disabled, and children
  • This group received some money weekly
  • If they were lucky, they also received food

POVERTY LIFE: ABLE BODIED POOR

  • Category included people who could work, and tried to work
  • Had parish work house jobs
  • Received some of the poor's benefits until a stable job was maintained

POVERTY LIFE: ROUGES/VAGABONDS

  • Category included people who could work, but didn't
  • Rather than working, preferred to beg or steal
  • Targeted by government because of their crime

RELATIONSHIP TO JULIUS CAESAR

  • This is the time period when Shakespeare wrote the play
  • Also the time period the play is set in
  • Helps understand what kind of time period Julius Caesar is in
  • Also helps know what kind of lives the people may have lived

PERSONAL REFLECTION ON TOPIC

  • People living in poverty have a tough life
  • I found it interesting that people preferred to steal
  • Happy that some people chose to work
