The Tuscarora Indians were like many other Indian tribes. The men went out and hunted deer, rabbits, and they fished daily for food. Women stayed at the village and planted crops and looked after the children.
The Tuscarora Indians lived in North Carolina for 50 years with the Europeans. Their villages were raided constantly. Their people would be kidnapped and sold into slavery. The Indians had no choice but to attack the settlers.
This war was called the Tuscarora War, it lasted from 1711 to 1713. In 1718 a treaty was signed between Chief Blount the leader of the Tuscarora Indians and the settlers. Chief Blount of the Tuscarora Indians helped the settlers capture and kill Chief Hancock. Chief Blount was now in complete control of the Tuscarora tribe.
During the war 950 Indians were killed or captured. Following the war most of the Tuscarora Indians migrated north from North Carolina to New York and all the way up to Canada. They migrated because they didn't want to be ruled by Chief Blount.
After migrating north the Tuscarora Indians joined forces with many other tribes and the British-American forces during the 7 Years War. The British-American side eventually won the war when Indian Tribes on the side of the French changed sides. The French had no chance of victory after that and were eventually driven from all of North America completely.
The Tuscarora Indians didn't separate from the other tribes after the war. Almost all descendants from the tribe alive today are living in Oklahoma. They live there because after the war the were slowly relocated to Oklahoma by the settlers.
The present day Tuscarora School District is a lasting effect from the Tuscarora Tribe. When the tribe migrated from North Carolina up through New York and Canada some members branched off in different areas. One of those areas is in Maryland.
