WHAT IS TWITTER?

Twitter is a real time information network that connects you to the news and information that YOU want to see. Today we are bombarded with information that we must sort through. Twitter lets you choose what you want to see by following a conversation. Twitter is great for discovering interesting people online who share common interests.

TWEETS

WHY 140?

Tweets should be short and to the point. Think of them as short bursts of information.

Since we only have 140 characters to work with, some thought needs to go in to writing a good Tweet.

Bits of information that are only 140 characters long prevent us from getting bombarded with too much information.

Followers read your Tweets at a glance.

2 TYPES OF PEOPLE ON TWITTER

There are two types of people on Twitter. There are those who Tweet and there are those who Follow. You don't have to be a Tweeter to enjoy the benefits of Twitter. That's the first thing I usually tell people. Most of the people on Twitter are followers. Just listen in and absorb the information.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO TWEET TO ENJOY TWITTER

JUST LISTEN IN AND ABSORB THE INFO BY FOLLOWING OTHERS
You don't have to Tweet to use Twitter. In fact, many people are Followers and simply follow others and Tweet every now and then.

Others Tweet all the time.

FOLLOWING

Following is not like being someone's Friend on Facebook. Following is not a 2 way street. You may follow someone, but they may or may not follow you back. Keep in mind, people want to following those who provide them with interesting or useful information.

YOUR TWITTER @NAME

YOUR TWITTER NAME IS PRECEDED BY A @
Twitter names are always designated with the @.

This is also how you can mention someone in a Tweet, or send them a direct Tweet.

Mentioning others in Tweets is a good way to have other join in the conversation.

THE HASHTAG #

The hashtag. The hashtag is at the heart of Twitter. You will pick up on hashtags as you go. Hashtags are words or phrases that have a # prefix (ex. #hashtag).

Hashtags categorize your Tweets and help others see or find your Tweets. Clicking on a hashtags shows you every other conversation that contains that hashtag.
