THYROID GLAND

  • One of the largest glands in the endocrine system.
  • Found in the neck below the thyroid cartilage.
  • Controls how quickly the body uses energy and makes proteins.

T3 & T4 EFFECTS

  • Control metabolism.
  • People with lower levels tend to produce more weight.
  • People with higher levels tend to gain less weight.

DISORDERS

  • Hypothyroidism is a lack of thyroid hormones.
  • Two types:
  • Cretinism-condition of severely stunted physical and mental growth
  • Myxedema-swelling of the skin and underlying tissues giving a waxy consistency
