HOW DID THE CRISIS BEGIN?

The protests broke out after President Yanukovych's government rejected a far-reaching accord with the European Union in November 2013 in favour of stronger ties with Russia. Thousands of people, outraged that a long-standing aspiration for integration with Europe had been ditched overnight, poured into central Kiev for peaceful protests

But, police attacks on student protesters, severe new anti-protest laws, and the abduction and beating of opposition activists - caused the demonstrations to spread and intensify. For many people, they were less about Europe than about getting rid of a president who they believed was clinging to power and serving the interests of his own close circle and Moscow.

WHO IS PRESIDENT YANUKOVYCH AND WHY HAS HE FLED?

He is former president of the Ukraine. Yanukovych first ran for president in 2004, but the Ukrainian Supreme Court nullified and ordered a re-run of the initial second-round ballot electing him, which was fraught with allegations of fraud and voter intimidation amid widespread citizen protests and occupation of Kiev's Independence Square in what became known as the Orange Revolution. Instead he was prime minister and later ran for president again and became president.

He fled the country into Russia because the Ukrainian authorities have issued an arrest warrant saying he is responsible for the mass killings.

WHY DID THE CONFLIT EsCALATE

Protests in Kiev began in November when it became clear that President Yanukovych had turned his back on an agreement with the European Union. Yet at critical moments since then, the rallies seemed to taper off, as when Russia offered Ukraine a $15 billion lifeline to stem the economic crisis.

WHAT ROLE DO RUSSIA AND THE WEST PLAY IN THE CONFLICT

The west supports Ukraine being with Europe and Russia supports president Yanukovych. This could start another Cold War if not stopped.

WAYS THE CONFLICT WILL END

Ways to stop the conflict is to split the country and make two Ukraines. The conflict has killed many people and if it doesn't end it will kill many more people. The west supporting Europe and Russia supporting President Yanukovych could potentially start a world war 3.
