THERE ARE TWO DIFFERENT TYPES OF RAYS:

UVA RAYS AND UVB RAYS

UVA RAYS

  • PENETRATE THE DERMIS, THE SKIN'S DEEPEST LAYER
  • ULTRAVIOLET IN THE "A" RANGE, 320-400 NANOMETERS

UVB RAYS

  • USUALLY ONLY BURN THE SUPERFICIAL LAYERS OF THE SKIN
  • IN THE "B" RANGE, 280-320 NANOMETERS

Untitled Slide

  • ULTRAVIOLET WAVES RANGE FROM 10-400 NANOMETERS, ABOUT THE SIZE OF A MOLECULE
  • THE LONGER THE WAVELENGTH, THE MORE PENETRATING IS THE WAVE OF LIGHT
  • THIS IS WHY UVA DOES MORE DAMAGE TO THE HUMAN BODY THAN UVB
  • IT'S LONGER THAN AN X-RAY, BUT SHORTER THAN A VISIBLE LIGHT

INTERESTING FACTS

  • THE HIGHER THE SPF OF SUNSCREEN, THE MORE PROTECTION AGAINST RAYS
  • THEY ARE PRESENT IN SUNLIGHT
  • THEY GIVE THE HUMAN BODY VITAMIN D
