What the is Ocean?

  • The ocean is a large mass of water covering 75% of Earth.
  • The oceans are separated into 5 main divisions
  • They include the Arctic,Indian,Atlantic,Antarctic,and the Pacific oceans  
  • The ocean is home to many different plants and animals.

Ocean Levels

The ocean has three major levels.

Sunlit Zone

  • The sunlit zone also know as euphotic zone extends to about 660 feet
  • Here, there is enough light for photosynthesis, so  plants can live there.
  • Examples of euphotic zone animals include most ocean fish such as sharks jellyfish
  • Add The temperature in this zone ranges from 104 to 27 degrees F.

Twilight Zone

  • The twilight zone or the disphotic zone begins at depths up to 600 feet
  • This zone extends from 660 to 3,300 feet.
  • The temperature ranges from 41 to 39 degrees F
  • The animals that live here are adapted to life  near darkness. 

Midnight Zone

  • The aphotic zone the deepest  of the world's ocean layers.
  •  The midnight zone gets no sunlight at all.
  • Temperature is nearly freezing and pressure is extremely high.

Whales

  • Whales are large ocean mammals.
  • Many whales are toothless.
  • There are 79 to 84 different species of whale.
  • The blue whale is considered one the largest animals on earth today. 

Sea Turtles

  •  Sea turtles are able to hold their breath for hours at a time.
  • They spend their entire lives at sea, except when adult females come ashore to lay eggs
  • The female turtles lay eggs every 2 to 5 years.
  • Sea turtles make their home in tropical and subtropical oceans worldwide.
