UNDERSTANDING WALDEN

BY: MAXWELL COTTON

I WENT TO THE WOODS BECAUSE I WISHED TO LIVE DELIBERATELY

The quote shows his RP because it shows that he wanted to go into the woods alone and understand the essentials of life and to be apart of nature. He wanted to live in a place that was unhurried and a place where he could come in touch with life. He wanted to live a life of his own and not a life that he had to listen to other people and conform.

“I see nothing
special to attract me, all the elements are unusually congenial to me”

Thoreau uses the word congenial to describe how nature fits all of his needs. His RP was to go into the woods and be apart of nature. He strangely finds that everything that is essential to life is in nature.

“Heaven is under our feet as well as over our heads”

Thoreau is trying to express that heaven is here on earth as well as in the sky. Being in touch with nature and earth is a heaven in itself. He has found that the ground that we walk on should be considered our heaven as well because it gives us everything we need for survival.

“One attraction in coming to the woods to live was that I should have leisure and opportunity to see the spring come in”

The transformation of winter to spring is another great phenomenon in nature. Seeing the change that occurs in nature and being able to experience the change gives a new perspectives life. It was another reason why Thoreau was going to the woods was to experience more in nature and see all the great things on earth.

“The surface of the earth is soft and impressible by the feet of men; and so with the paths which the mind travels.”

Man is unable to change nature. We are apart of nature and the ground in which we walk on should be appreciated more. Thoreau’s RP of being more in touch with man he realizes that we are already apart of nature and we must take care of it.
