  • WW2 and the American Civil Wars
Unexploded ordnance, also known as UXOs, are explosive weapons like bombs, grenades and land mines, that did not explode when they were planted and still pose a risk of explosions even though they were made and planted a long time ago. This happened mostly during WW2 but it started all the way back in the American civil wars. As you can see, my background image here is a mine planted in the ocean. It is old and also counted as a unexploded ordnance.

There are many countries with UXOs but today I will be talking about Japans UXOs. As you can see, this is the map of Japan. . In Japan, the place that was affected the most was the Okinawa prefecture. During WW2 many explosives were planted there.

How many uxos?

  • Over 1,500 discoveries
  • Battle of Okinawa
  • 5% of 200,000 ton
How many UXOs are there? The answer is A LOT. Over 1,500 discoveries per year across Japan but The Battle of Okinawa, part of WW2, also part of the Pacific War, left the island filled with all these nasty surprises. The amount of UXOs there is, is about 5% of 200,000 tons of ordnance dropped and planted on the island. So how much is 5%? 10,000. A total of 7,000 tons were disposed.

NOW...

  • 3,000 tons left
  • 50 tons per year = 60 years
  • Few injuries
That leaves us to about 3,000 tons left to discover. However after 55 years, these UXOs remain hidden. Now, approximately 50 tons are discovered per year but that still leaves us with 60 more years to discover and dispose all of these UXOs. Despite how frequently the UXOs are discovered, there were a few injuries made recently.
