Acids and Bases and their properties.

PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Unit 11

Acids and Bases

Acids Properties!

  • Taste Sour.
  • have a pH
  • will react with some metals & make hydrogen gas.
  • Turn litmus paper blue.
  • have more H+ ions than OH- ions
  • when combined with a base will produce water and a salt.

Base Properties!

  • Taste Bitter
  • have a pH > 7
  • feel slippery
  • turn litmus paper red
  • have fewer H+ ions than OH- ions
  • when combined with an acid will produce water and salt.

Both Acids and Bases!

  • Are Electrolytes
  • will conduct electricity
  • can change colors of indicators.

Arrhenius Acids and Bases!

Acids were defined as proton donors and bases as proton acceptors

Bronsted-Lowry Acids and Bases

Defines acids and bases as conjugate pairs that differ by one proton.

pOH and pH!

The formulas will help you find H+, OH-, pOH & pH.

pOH & pH formulas

  • [H+] = 10-pH
  • pH = -log[H+]
  • pOH = -log[OH−]
  • [OH−] = 10-pOH
  • pH + pOH = 14
  • [H+][OH−]=1 x 10-14
