American Industrial Revolution

  • Took place when the Civil war ended.
  • Social and economic changes in the U.S. which involved the widespread adoption of industrial methods of production.

Laissez Faire

  • a policy that allows businesses to operate with very little interference from the government.

Trust

  • A group of corporations run by one board of directors.

Robber baron

  • A businessman who uses ruthless business tactics.

Vertical integration

  • A single company owns all the different businesses on which it depends for its operations

Horizontal Integration

  • Takes over or buys out a competitor in an effort to gain market share.

Political machines

  • Control the activities of political parties in the citie.

  • An island in upper New York Bay: a former U.S. immigrant examination station.

Tenements

  • a room or a set of rooms forming a separate residence within a house or block of apartments

ethnic enclaves

  • Neighborhoods that were separated by ethinic groups
