PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Imperialism: Imperialism is when a stronger nation takes over a weaker nation. The United States use to be an imperialist country, it would use its military power to gain more territory like during the Spanish-American War. After that War the US gained Guam, Puerto-Rico, Cuba and the Philippines, making it an imperialist country.
Spanish American War: The Spanish American War happened in 1898 it was also given the name of "Splendid Little War" because there wasn't a lot of casualties. American became an imperialist country after this because they obtained Guam, the Philippines, Puerto-Rico, and Cuba. The war helped give the countries their "independence" to free them from Spanish rule.
Protectorate: Protectorate is a country that is practically independent but they're still under the control of another country. For example, Cuba is a protectorate country because it is still under US rule.
Platt Amendment: The Platt Amendment was created in 1901 to add to the Cuban constitution. The amendment allowed US certain privileges, like the right to maintain naval bases and intervene in their affairs. The Cubans had no choice but to accept this amendment because the US had just helped them gain "independence."
Yellow Journalism: Yellow journalism was exaggerated stories with shocking drawings that had little factual information. Yellow journalism was used by publishers to get the people to buy their newspaper. It was also one of the reasons that the Spanish American War started, since so many people were reading these exaggerated stories, they started to support the idea of war.
Propaganda: Propaganda is information that is opinion based to influence peoples' views. During WW1 America used propaganda a lot to finance, support the war, demonize the enemies, conserve food, and recruit people to fight in the war.
Panama Canal: The Panama Canal was built after Panama was free from Colombian rule. The US encouraged the revolution so that they could be able to build the canal. They wanted this canal to be built so that they could have a quicker and cheaper way of shipping goods between the Pacific and Atlantic coasts.
War Industries Board: The War Industries Board was created to arrange production of war materials. These industries helped sustain the United States's economy and production schedules. They were used to produce war materials, which was very important during this time, 1917.
Victory Garden: The Victory Garden was when people during WW1 would grow their own produce at their house so that the remaining goods that were left could be sent to the troops in war.
Great Migration: The Great Migration is when a 300,000- 500,000 African Americans moved from the South to the North to fill in the jobs voids since so many workers left to go fight in war. This migration changed the racial makeup of many Northern cities.
Sedition Act: The Sedition Act that was passed in May 1918 made it illegal for anyone to talk bad or criticize the government or president. Sedition means treason/ going against one's country. The punishment for breaking the law would mean jail time (20 years) or paying a hefty fine (10,000)
League of Nations: The League of Nations was created in 1901 by Woodrow Wilson to preserve peace and prevent wars by taking an oath to respect one another political independence and territory. However, the US did not join because congress believe it would tangle the US world affairs
Wilson's 14 Points: Wilson's 14 points was created by Woodrow Wilson in hopes to keep peace between all countries to avoid conflict in the future. These 14 points were presented during the Paris Peace conference.
Queen Liliuokalani: Queen Liliuokalani was the first and last women to be part of Hawaii's monarchy. She was overthrown by businessmen in 1893, this would later on be called out as an illegal thing to do. This would then make Hawaii the 50th state of the US.
Hearst and Pulitzer: Hearst and Pulitzer were the 2 reporters that published yellow journalism about the Spanish American War making it one of the reasons why America went to war with Spain. With the yellow journalism they were publishing it made people push for war pressuring the government
Great White Fleet: The Great White Fleet was the 16 battleships of the new US Navy that the president, Theodore Roosevelt, sent on a journey around the world to show off their new military power.
Liberty Bonds: Liberty Bonds were issued by the government for the purpose of financing the war. When the Americans bought these bonds they were loaning money to the government that they would pay back with interest in a couple of years. With this being said people bought these bonds to support and get more money later on.
Theodore Roosevelt: President Theodore Roosevelt made the Panama Canal happen, created the Big Stick diplomacy, and the Great White Fleet. These 3 of his many accomplishments helped build US military power and economic power.
Big Stick Diplomacy: The Big Stick Diplomacy was a policy that was named by president Theodore Roosevelt to explain the assertion of dominance through force of the Navy when necessary. This was to show that they would use the "Big Stick" whenever they had to, when they felt threatened
Open Door Policy: The Open Door policy was passed in 1899 that declared that other nations must share trading rights with the US they all agreed but China did not know. It helped promote equal opportunities for international trades
