Fundamentalism - a movement that was based on the literal interpretations of the Bible. Many people thought that the words in the Bible were the truth and that there were no underlying meanings to it

Model T - affordable car that led to more independence for women and teens, people moving to the suburbs, and more factory jobs in the Midwest. Back then everyone was using the Model T because it helped everyone get around faster and farther

speakeasy - illegal hidden bars and nightclubs that sold alcohol. Since alcohol was considered illegal people went to speakeasies to get in a few sips of it. Plus music was a big part of a speakeasy.

Ku Klux Klan - racist white supremacist group that increased to 4 million members nationwide in the 20s due to anti-immigration sentiment. This group terrorized anyone who wasn't white and they grew because of public advertisment.

flappers - a woman of the 20s who drank, smoked, and loved to dance. Some people thought these young women were throwing their lives away but others thought that they were strong and independent women who didn't need a man

AAA - New Deal program that paid farmers not to raise certain crops to lower crop surplus. Government bought livestock for slaughter and paid farmers subsidies not to plant on part of their land.

Harlem Renaissance - 1920s African Americans movement that created an environment that stimulated artistic development, racial pride, a sense of community, and political organization. Brought African American culture to life in the 1920s

NAACP - Organization that fought for the rights of American Americans and published the magazine called the Crisis. One program that tried to help African Americans in the 1920s.

ACLU - an organization that fought to uphold American civil liberties if violated by the government. It helped guarantee to every person in this country by the Constitution and laws of the United States.

Stock Market Crash - 1929 event that signaled the beginning of the Great Depression. Some investors lost all their money that they had invested in stocks. This event made everyone lose their jobs and most people became homeless.

Hawley Smoot Tariff - In 1930, Congress passed the toughest tariff in U.S. History. Other countries responded by enacted their own tariffs and soon world trade fell 40%. This stop all foreign trade.

New Deal - FDR's collection of programs to provide relief, recovery, and reform during the 1930s. After the market crashed FDR did everything he could to make more jobs for the people.

Dust Bowl - a severe drought gripped the Great Plains in the early 1930s. Wind scattered the topsoil, exposing sand and grit. Many people in the Midwest became effected and had to move to California

SEC - New Deal program that was created to regulate the stock market and prevent fraud. It helps protect investors, maintain fair, orderly, and efficient markets, and facilitate capital formation.

Okies - Dust Bowl refugees who fled to California to work in agriculture. They were met with hostility over the competition for jobs. They had nowhere to go because the Dust Bowl covered all the fields

Bonus Army - In 1932 15,000 WW1 vets arrived in Washington to support a proposed bonus bill. The putnam Bill was not passed and the WW1 vets who refused to leave were gasses and pushed out of DC. This even hirt Hoovers image further.

CCC - New Deal program that gave unemployed men aged 18-25 the opportunity to work with the national forestry service. It was a was a voluntary public work relief program that operated from 1933 to 1942 in the United States to help the unemployed.

Fireside Chats - radio announcements made by president Roosevelt. His first radio message was aimed as assuring the Americans for jobs. These were also to reassure Americans that the stock markets were regulating.

TVA - New Deal program that built hydroelectric plants and dams aimed at improving seven Southern states and attracting industry to the South. It helped during the Great Depression by reducing these problems by teaching better farming methods, replanting trees, and building dams.

FDIC - New Deal program that provided government insurance for bank deposits up to $2,500. It helped to provide stability to the economy and the failing banking system.
