John F. Kennedy:
35th president. Served during a period of the Cold War and the Civil Rights Movement.
Richard Nixon:
37th president. Also served for a time during the Cold War. Escalated the Vietnam War. He initiated detente and the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty.
Lyndon B. Johnson:
36th president. Greatly escalated the Vietnam war after JFK's assassination.
Nikita Khrushchev:
Russian politician who led Soviet Union during a period of the Cold War. Negotiated with JFK during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Peace Corp:
A volunteer program started by JFK where people go around the world providing services.
Job Corp:
Part of LBJ's war on poverty.
Bay of Pigs: A failed attempt to overthrow Castro, led by JFK.
Cuban Missile Crisis:
A 13 day argument between the U.S. and the Soviet Union over nuclear weapons.
Berlin Wall:
The wall built to separate East and West Berlin.
Warren Court:
Period of Supreme Court with Earl Warren as Chief of Justice.
Miranda Rights:
Rights given to suspects when attained by police.
Great Society:
A set of domestic programs set into motion by LBJ.
Medicare: Provides health insurance to Americans.
Medicaid:
Second largest source of health insurance.
NASA:
Stands for National Aeronautics and Space Administration and is a government agency responsible for air and space technology.
Immigration Act 1965:
Abolished an earlier immigration quota system.
Title IX:
No person shall be denied the benefits of any education program or activity.
Martin L King Jr.:
Civil Rights activist. Gave many inspiring speeches and led many impactful movements.
Thurgood Marshall:
Very successful lawyer who joined the Supreme Court.
Malcom X:
Civil Rights activist who, unlike king, was not afraid to resort to violence.
James Farmer:
Civil Rights activist who worked alongside King.
Montgomery Bus Boycott:
A boycott against the bus system in Alabama.
Little Rock 9:
A group of African American students who enrolled into Little Rock Central High School.
Brown v Board of Education:
The court case that ended segregation in schools.
24th Amendment:
Banned unfair poll taxes.
Civil Rights Act 1964:
Banned segregation based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.
UC v Bakke:
Court case that ruled racial quotas for colleges unconstitutional.
Feminine Mystique:
The book that started feminism.
United Farm Workers:
A labor union for mistreated migrant farm workers.
Cesar Chavez:
Civil Rights activist who fought for the rights of migrant farm workers in America.
American Indian Movement:
Organization formed to address Native American rights.
Sonewall Inn Riots:
A series of violent raids on the LGBT community.
