Christopher Columbus Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy. Common knowledge at that time was that the world was round, but the size was undetermined. Columbus thought that, if the world was round, he could sail west instead of east to get to Asia.
However, he needed someone to sponsor his trip. After years of frustration, Queen Isabella decided to provide Columbus with the funds to explore. On August 3, 1492, he set out from Spain with three ships, the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria. After too long at sea, he finally reached land.
Jacques Cartier Jacques Cartier was a French explorer who sailed up the St. Lawrence River, hoping that it would lead to the Pacific. Instead, he found a peak that he called Mount Royal, which is present day Montreal.
Henry Hudson Henry Hudson was hired first by the Dutch nation. He discovered the river that now bears his name, instead of his goal, India. The next year he was sent by England. His shipmates rebelled and set him adrift.
Roanoke Queen Elizabeth gave Sir Walter Raleigh a charter to claim land in America. His crew found Roanoke Island. They faced a tough winter, barely surviving. When John White went back for supplies, he was delayed in his return. When he finally got back, all of the colonists had disappeared.
