  • the notional barrier separating the former Soviet bloc and the West prior to the decline of communism that followed the political events in eastern Europe in 1989.
  • This period was a bad time for the West

Containment

  • the action or policy of preventing the expansion of a hostile country or influence.
  • The soviet union made a containment during the iron curtain

NATO

  • the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, is a military alliance of European and North American democracies founded after World War II to strengthen international ties between member states—especially the United States and Europe.
  • Nato was created for the better of the countries.

Truman Doctrine

  • The Truman Doctrine was an American foreign policy created to counter Soviet geopolitical hegemony during the Cold War.
  • The Truman Doctrine may have been the caused of no physical war.

Marshall Plan

  • An American initiative to aid Western Europe, in which the United States gave $13 billion in economic support to help rebuild Western European economies after the end of World War
  • These countries were in desprate need for money to rebuild the damages.

Cold War

  • The Cold War was a long period of tension between the democracies of the Western World and the communist countries of Eastern Europe.
  • No physical damage was done during the cold war.

Warsaw Pact

  • A military alliance of communist nations in eastern Europe. Organized in 1955 in answer to NATO, the Warsaw Pact included Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and the Soviet Union.
  • This alliance help aid the war as it help not start another

brinkmanship

  • the art or practice of pursuing a dangerous policy to the limits of safety before stopping, typically in politics.
  • This can be used as a strategy for other countries

Mao Zedong

  • Chinese Communist leader and theorist. A founder of the Chinese Communist Party (1921), he commanded troops in the Chinese Civil War
  • Many citzens agreed to mao's theories

Jiang Jieshi

  • Chinese military and political figure who led the Nationalists against the rising Communist forces and was driven from the mainland to Taiwan (1949), where he served as president of Nationalist China until his death.
  • Jiang can be considered as a big leader for serving for his country till death

  • Can be considered as a leader in North Vietnam.

Domino Theory

  • the theory that a political event in one country will cause similar events in neighboring countries,
  • Countries will follow what others do like a dominoe effect.

  • staunchly anticommunist Vietnamese statesman who refused to ally with Ho Chi Minh after the Franco-Vietnamese War.
  • He did not agree with a lot of things Ho Chi Minh said.

Vietcong

  • a member of the communist guerrilla movement in Vietnam that fought the South Vietnamese government forces 1954–75 with the support of the North Vietnamese army and opposed the South Vietnamese and US forces in the Vietnam War.
  • Thought to be a big leader in the guerrilla movement.

Vietnamization

  • the US policy of withdrawing its troops and transferring the responsibility and direction of the war effort to the government of South Vietnam.
  • This help the Vietnam war out a lot better.

Khmer Rouge

  • The Khmer Rouge was the ruling political party of Cambodia—which it renamed the Democratic Kampuchea—from 1975 to 1979
  • The term "Khmer Rouge," meaning "Red Khmer" in French, was coined by Cambodian head of state Norodom Sihanouk and was later adopted by English speakers.

  • he developing countries of Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
  • This was help to bring alliances and end any wars.

Nonaligned nations

  • Nations of the Third World that as a group rejected alliance with either the United States or the former Soviet Union.
  • This could cause problems with the united states.

Fidel Castro

  • a Cuban politician and revolutionary who governed the Republic of Cuba as its Prime Minister from 1959 to 1976 and then as its President from 1976 to 2008.
  • Served for Cuba for a very long time and is well known.

  • officially the President of Nicaragua from 1 January 1937 to 1 May 1947 and from 21 May 1950 to 29 September 1956, but ruled effectively as dictator from 1936 until his assassination.
  • Anastasio ruled a very long time as the people liked him.

  • José Daniel Ortega Saavedra is a Nicaraguan politician who has been President of Nicaragua since 2007
  • Daniel is still ruiling today as a president of Nicaragua

  • Nikita was already lined up to be a secretary

Leonid Brezhnev

  • Soviet leader. He was instrumental in removing Khrushchev from power (1964) and served as general secretary of the Communist Party of the USSR (1964-1982)
  • Leonid was one of the key reasons for removing Kruschev

  • He was also the vice presdient of john f kennedy.

  • the easing of hostility or strained relations, especially between countries.
  • This could cause physical warface if it gets out of hand.

Richard M. Nixon

  • Richard Milhous Nixon was the 37th President of the United States, serving from 1969 to 1974 when he became the only U.S. president to resign the office.
  • Nixon is still to this date the only president to resign.

SALT

  • Amidst the Cold War, a series of treaties was issued under the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty to curtail the build up of nuclear weapons.
  • This stopped the build of weapons as it also can cause countries to go to war.

Ronald Reagan

  • Ronald Wilson Reagan was an American politician and actor, who served as the 40th President of the United States from 1981 to 1989.
  • Ronald Reagan also starred during movies.
