Balancing equations

Students will be able to balance equations.

Why balance equations?

  • Balancing equations is necessary because of the laws of conservation of matter, which states that "matter cannot be created or destroyed, but only changed from one form to another."
  • This means that the number of atoms on both sides of the equation must be the same
  • This is also important because balanced equations helps scientists keep track of chemical reactions.

Biblical integration: God's command

  • “Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”” ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭1:28‬ ‭NKJV‬‬ http://bible.com/114/gen.1.28.nkjv
  • The Creation Mandate tells us to"fill the earth and subdue it", and balanced equations help us to be more organized.
  • They are a short concise way to record chemical reaction
  • The act of balancing equations reinforces the Law of Conservation of Matter, which is a natural law set in place by God.
  • The discovery of this law helped us to further understand the amazing world that God has created for us.

QOD

  • Balance this equation: 2Ca + O2—> CaO

Examples

  • H2 +O2—> H2O = 2H2 + O2—> 2H2O
  • This is hydrogen reacting with oxygen to form water molecules.
  • It was this reaction that caused the Hindenburg to burn up, and is also why we no longer put hydrogen in blimps.

Examples

Balance this equation: 2Na + 2H2O—> 2NaOH + H2
Already balanced.
