There were millions of animals that were in the war... each animal had some way to help... from dogs sniffing out land mines to the horses galloping into a battle. These animals came out of war -if they even came out- unrecognized for their life saving deeds.
The National Archives scanned through 63,000 photos recorded about the first World War. The photos showed everyday lives of soldiers; however, when the National Archives looked closer, they noticed something new -animals.
Kristin DeAnfrasio learned that the most unique of animals ended up being animals that were caught and taken from the wild to serve as mascots for the soldiers.
