JOHN HANCOCK CHILDHOOD

  • John Hancock was born on January 23 1737 in Braintree, Massachusetts
  • The elder Hancock died when John was a child, and his mother took him and his siblings to live with in-laws in Lexington.
  • Then later sent john to live with his aunt and uncle since they didn't have any children they adopted john.

JOHNS CHILDHOOD

  • Thomas was a wealthy merchant who owned a highly successful shipping business.
  • John went on to attend Harvard College, graduating in 1754 and subsequently working with his uncle.
  • When Thomas, johns uncle died john inherited his family business and estate.

ROLE IN THE REVOLUTION

  • leader of colonial resistance.
  • Hancock's name has become a synonym for "signature" thanks to his famously large flourish as the first signer of the Declaration of Independence.
  • Agree to sign the Declaration of Independence with the risk of being charge with treason.

CLAIM TO FAME

  • Hancock's historical importance rests on his leadership of Massachusetts before,during and after the Revolution
  • He is best known for his large bold signature on the Declaration of Independence.
