Slavery

  • The South remained a predominantly agrarian economy.
  • North became more and more industrialized.
  • The agrarian South utilized slaves to tend its large plantation and perform other duties.
  • The North on the other hand gradually abolished slavery.
  • All of this led to disagreements on issues such as taxis and tariffs.

State's Rights

  • The North's economic progresses as the Sothern economy began to stall fueled the fires of resentment.
  • Abolitionist groups sprang up in the North, making Southerners feel that their way of life was under attack.
  • Southerners consistently argued for states rights and a weak federal government, also argued that having a ratified the constitution retained the power to cancel the argument.

  • Competition among sections or regions of a country the different regions were the North and South.
  • The west didn't practice it, instead other regions fought to control the destiny of the West.
  • South had agricultural, plantations, cheap labor in forms of slaves.
  • North had industrial, business and industry, and life faster pace.

BATTLE OF FORT SUMTER

  • It was the first battle of the American Civil War.
  • South Carolina won.
  • North quoted, "..that shot was a sound of alarm that brought every soldier in the harbor to his feet."
  • South quoted, "We shall be in one of the bloodiest civil wars that history has recorded."

  • Over 23,000 died in the one-day Battle of Antietam, making it the bloodiest day in American history.
  • North won.
