SLAVERY (CAUSE)

  • The North was not officially fighting to end slavery (at least not until Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation midway through the war). It was fighting to uphold the principle that no state had the right to secede from the Union. But the South was definitely fighting to preserve slavery.

STATE'S RIGHT (CAUSE)

  • Congress passed a law that kept new states admitted to the country from being slave states. Every single slave state voted against this law, yet it was still passed because the government was dominated by the Republicans. The South saw that it practically had no power in the federal government, and would rather form their own. So they did. Abraham Lincoln decided he must mobilize the military to fight the rebels in order to protect the union of the United States.

SECTIONALISM (CAUSE)

  • Sectionalism contributed to a Southern identity based not only on a distinctively different way of life, but on a geographically shared mistrust and apprehension towards the Northern way of life represented by the federal government and the election of United States President Abraham Lincoln. By the time of the election, the South had already developed its own sense of regional nationalism, based on a slave-labor agrarian economic system, that felt threatened by the anti-slavery stance of the heavily-industrialized North.

BATTLE OF FORT SUMTER

  • Significance-The significance of Fort Sumter is that it is where the Civil War essentially started. When the Union tried to resupply the fort and the South fired on the fort, the war was inevitable.

  • South's(Confederacy)Quote-"Why we always losing🙃🔫"

BATTLE OF VICKSBURG

  • Significance-The Vicksburg Campaign was a significant Union victory in the American Civil War because it gave the Union army complete control over the Mississippi River and cut the Confederacy in two. The western Confederacy would remain isolated from the east for the rest of the war, unable to provide material support for the Confederate government.
  • Winner-North
  • North's(Union)Quote-"We win more land losers😂✋🏽"
  • South's(Confederacy)Quote-"We look so stupid😒"

EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION

  • Significance-The Emancipation Proclamation led the way to total abolition of slavery in the United States. With the Emancipation Proclamation, the aim of the war changed to include the freeing of slaves in addition to preserving the Union.
  • Quote-"We are free and living🙌🏼"

SURRENDER AT APPOMATTOX COURTHOUSE
