August 14 and August 15 are now known as "Victory Over Japan Day" or , V-J Day.

The Allies dropped over 100,000 tons of explosives on over 60 Japanese countries between March and July 1945 alone.

On August 14, the day the Japanese surrendered, Harry S. Truman said “This is the day we have been waiting for since Pearl Harbor. This is the day when Fascism finally dies, as we always knew it would.”

Many places celebrate V-J Day, but Rhode Island is the only state that has dedicated a day to celebrate V-J Day.
