WHAT IS VAGINITIS

  • Vaginitis is inflammation of the vagina

HOW COMMON IS VAGINITIS

  • Vaginitis affects millions of women and one of the primary reasons women visit their doctors

HOW DO YOU GET VAGINITIS

  • An allergic reaction can cause vaginitis. For example an allergic reaction to condoms, certain soaps

HOW IS VAGINITIS DIAGNOSED

  • Checking vaginal fluid appearance, vaginal pH levels, presence of volatile amines and microscope detection of specific cells

WHAT ARE SOME COMPLICATIONS

  • The bacterial vaginosis

IS THERE A TREATMENT FOR VAGINITIS

  • Cortisone cream if symptoms are severe, antihistamine if caused by allergic reaction, estrogen if cause by low estrogen levels

HOW CAN VAGINITIS BE PREVENTED

  • Good hygiene, avoid wiping from bottom to vagina, wear loose clothing, and practice safe sex

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU DON'T TREAT VAGINITIS

  • Bv may result in increased risk of pelvic inflammatory disease

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF VAGINITIS

  • Abnormal or increased discharge
  • Itching
  • Fishy odor
  • Irritation
  • Painful urination or vaginal bleeding
