THE PINNACLE OF ITALIAN COUTURE

BIRTHPLACE

  • Born May 11, 1932
  • Voghera, Lombardy, Italy
  • Decided from very young age he wanted to design women's dresses
  • Worked for his Aunt Rosa as apprentice

EDUCATION

  • Moved to Paris at the age of 17 to continue his education
  • Attended the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisenne
  • Also attended Ecole des Beaux-Arts

PROFESSIONAL START

  • After finishing school, Valentino started as an apprentice for Jean Desses and Guy Laroche
  • He helped to sketch ideas for Jean Desses
  • 1959, Valentino left Paris for Rome to open his own House of Valentino

  • In 1960, Valentino met Giancarlo Giammetti (architechture student)
  • They became business partners as well as romantic partners
  • Together the developed Valentino SpA which debuted in 1962 in Florence at Pitti Palace

OLIVER

  • Oliver was the name of his beloved pug who had passed away
  • Became a childrens line
  • He was an avid animal lover

  • Known for Valentino "red"

DESIGNS

  • Focuses on simple styles with little details, but he perfects the bias cut
  • Uses lots of bows
  • Known for incorporating French embroidery with Italian fabrics

RETIREMENT

  • Valentino announced his retirement in 2007
  • His final show was held at the Musee Rodin in Paris
  • Presented his ready to wear collection show during the spring/summer 2008 fashion week
  • Models such as Naomi Cambell, Claudia Schiffer, Eva Herzigova were present
  • These models had spent the majority of their career working with his designs

AWARDS

  • Awarded the prestigious Neiman Marcus Award for his no-color collection
  • His no-color collection later became known as 'V'
  • awarded Commandeur de l'orde des Arts et de Lettres medal in 2012

AFTER RETIREMENT

  • In 2011, Valentino opened a virtual museum
  • He still occassionallyy designs for a few particular clients
  • Designed Anne Hathaway's wedding dress
  • Also now carriers lines in fragrance, makeup, and accessories
