Scientific Name:

Vampyroteuthis infernalis

Physical Appearances:

  • Maximum length is 30cm or 1ft
  • Females are larger than males
  • Are black to pale red
  • 8 arms that are connected by webbing
  • Each arms is rowed with ciri (spine like projections)
  • Large blue or red eyes

  • covered in poorly developed photophores (light producing organism)

How does a vampire squid move? Nekton, it swims!

Vampire squids live in the Pacific,Atlantic, and Atlantic ocean.

Also, in the midnight zone.

  • segmented worms
  • swallower fish
  • tripod fish
  • tubeworms
  • viperfish
  • etc.

Physical Traits and How it Impacts

  • Large fin like ears-used for movement
  • bioluminescence- attract prey
  • low metabolic rate- how your body uses energy

Behavioral Traits and How it Impacts

  • Pulls its capped arms over the body- looking larger to stay safe from predators
  • Quickly moving fins in different angles - escaping predators by swimming in different angles

Human Impact:

  • Over fishing can impact organisms all over the ocean, if we fish too much zooplankton then things that eat them ( like vampire squid) will start decreasing
