PRESENTATION OUTLINE

VANADIUM

VEH-NAY-DEE-EM

BASIC FACTS

  • Atomic number: 23
  • Atomic weight: 50.9415
  • Element classification is a metal
  • Melting point: 1910 degrees celcius
  • Boiling point: 3407 degrees celcius

DISCOVEY

  • Discovered by Andes Manuel Rio
  • Was dicovered in 1801
  • Was named after Scandinavian goddess vanadis
  • Discovered a second time by Nil Gabriel Sefstrom
  • Vanadium is commonly found in different metals

USES

  • Used as an additive to steel or to make ferrovanandium
  • Rust resistant, used frequently in chemical industry
  • Commonly found in gears, crankshafts, axles
  • Mixed with aluminum and titanium alloys for jet engines
  • Used in nuclear reactor because of low neutron-adsorption ability

FERROVANADIUM

  • Formed by mixing iron and vanadium
  • Universal hardener, strengthener, and anit-corrosive additive to steel
  • First used to make the Ford Model-T, and still used in auto industry
  • Also used in surgical tools
  • Mainly used in moving parts that generate a lot of heat, drill bits, engine turbines, etc.

OTHER INFORMATION

  • Used is portable artillery pieces and body armour
  • Used in "rebar" to reinforce concrete
  • Used in batteries, can be discharged and recharged 20,000 times without losing performance
  • Used in solar panels to collect energy
  • Recently used in giant batteries called a "cell cube" , a solution to a renewable energy source
