Where they live

  • Vaquitas live in the Gulf of California
  • They live up close to the shore in shallow water

What they look like

  • Vaquitas are mostly gray
  • They have big dark black rings around their eyes.
  • They can weigh up to 120 pounds.
  • They can grow to be about 4-5 feet long

  • Vaquitas eat a lot of different things
  • Fish,squid,gulf croaker,and bronze-striped grunt

  • Vaquitas have 3 different predators
  • They are large sharks,killer whales,and orcinus orcas

Threats

  • Every 1 out of 5 get entangled in gill nets and drown
  • Originally set for sharks,rays,mackerels,and chano

THE HISTORY BEHIND THEM

The scientific word Phocoena is Latin for porpise or pig fish. And sinus means cavity a reference to the Gulf of Mexico. The name Vaquita has carried on ever since.

People plan to capture them into pins so they can put them in the wild and hopefully even breed in them.
