VASCO DA GAMA

Vasco da Gama was a highly successful Portuguese sailor and explorer

GAMA'S VOYAGE

  • Vasco Da Gama was the first explorer to travel from
  • Europe to India.
  • Vasco da Gama's first voyage took his ship around the Cape
  • Of good Hope and across the Indian Ocean.

DURING HIS VOYAGE

  • His mission was to open a sea route from Europe to the east
  • But on his expedition he had made numerous stops at Africa.
  • He then reached the trading post of Cacilut, India in May 1498

RETURN FROM CALICUT

  • On Vasco's return from Calicut during his journey back
  • they faced many storms along the way.
  • The passage through the Indian Ocean that took three weeks
  • took more than three months.
  • Many members of Gama's crew died.

SECOND VOYAGE

  • In 1502, King Manuel once again sent da Gama to India to
  • secure Portugal's dominance in the region.

VASCO DA GAMA'S ACHIEVEMENT

  • Not only did Vasco Da Gama improve
  • traveling routes for explorers.
  • But he also extended exploration routes.
  • So that was a huge contribution.
