Biography

  • Vasily Ivanovich Surikov was born on January 24, 1848, in Krasnoyarsk, Siberia. He grew up in a family of a Cossack officer and was the eighth child. As a young boy, Surikov showed a talent for drawing and painting. He went on to study art at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, but struggled academically and was expelled twice. After completing his studies, he returned to Siberia to work as a freelance artist. Surikov traveled extensively throughout Russia and Europe, studying the works of the Old Masters and developing his own unique style. He died on March 19, 1916, in Moscow, Russia, at the age of 68.
