VBS 2016 EXPEDITION NORWAY

VOLUNTEER ORIENTATION
A quick overview so you can get ready for our week of VBS together.

AT EXPEDITION NORWAY

WE WILL BE EXPLORING THE LIFE, TRADITIONS AND FLAVORS OF NORWAY
We will be going on a virtual adventure to Norway. You can look forward to a daily theme and bible stories. You can also look forward to learning about real children in Norway today.

AND DISCOVERING GOD IS GOOD!

We will discover that through all our joys and challenges, God is good!

Who's Who at VBS?

  • Station Leader
  • Crew Leader
  • Assistant Crew Leader or Assistant Station Leader
  • Crew members (students)

IF YOU ARE A CREW LEADER

  • Shepherd a small group of students throughout the day
  • Do activities along with the group
  • Assist station leaders as directed
  • Assistant Crew Leaders will help with all these things, help them learn the ropes so they can become crew leaders next year
Get to know the kids in your group. Use their names. Use positive instructions instead of negative. Follow the instructions of the station leaders, especially making sure to lead the discussions with your group.

IF YOU ARE A STATION LEADER

  • Plan and prepare the activities
  • Lead the activities
  • Ask for help from the crew leaders
  • There will be 4 groups traveling, each rotation has 2-3 groups of 5-6 students
  • There are 45 students currently registered.
There are 4 stations:

1. Bible Adventures (Upper Commons)
2. Fjord Fun & Games (outside on Goodrich lawn)
3. Experiencing Norway (Music Room)
4. Nordic Eats (Fellowship Hall)

Crew Member Roles

  • Luggage Handler
  • Schedule Supervisor
  • Travel Coordinator
  • Prayer Person
  • Thank You-er
Give everyone in your crew a role each day.

Roles can be shared if you have more crew members than roles.

Keep track of roles on the backs of the name tags

Station leaders, call on the crew members to do their jobs. Suggestions are written out in your leader manuals.

LOOK AND FEEL LIKE YOU ARE PART OF THE SCENE
Part of setting the scene means looking the part. I've been collecting Norwegian sweaters, and...

ACTUALLY, WE WILL WEAR RED AND BLUE APRONS

Just kidding! We won't be wearing Norwegian sweaters in the summer heat, but all leaders will have blue or red aprons. You can wear these over your regular clothes. Put your name on top of the apron.

Leader Snacks

  • Snack will be one of the rotations, we're going to be eating real foods of Norway.
  • There will be pop and special treats for leaders at noon in the kitchen.
  • Leaders will eat what the kids eat for snacks.

Safety

  • Parents need to sign their kids in and out from the crew leader.
  • Send children in pairs or groups to the bathroom
  • If a child needs help in the bathroom, leave the door open
  • Friendly hugs are good, but never touch where a swimsuit would cover
  • Immanuel Child Protection Policies
Be sure to read and sign the Child Protection Policies attached in the email. Return signature page to Deb

LOGISTICS

  • Don't bring valuables.
  • Lock purses in Deb's office
  • Arrive 15 minutes early, plan to stay 15 minutes late.
  • Volunteers are invited and encouraged to attend Family night on Thursday and sing in the VBS Choir on Sunday
  • You receive high honors if you stay for the pizza and clean up party on Friday, 12-2pm
