  • It was colonized since 1522
  • It became independent in 1811
  • It was reconquest 1815
  • It became independent again in 1816

SIMON BOLIVAR

  • Was the main general of the Venezuelan forces
  • It was the first president of the "New Venezuela"
  • Fought for the constitution of Venezuela
  • Also known as the George Washington of Venezuela

FRANCISCO DE MIRANDA

  • Was first with the Spanish army but became an important Venezuelan leader
  • Was member of the upper-middle class
  • Was exiled and Bolivar brought him back

MANUEL PIAR

  • General-in-chief of the Venezuelan army
  • Became leader of the army after Bolivar (1814)
  • Bolivar commanded his execution.
  • He became crazy for power

JOSE FRANCISCO DE SAN MARTIN MATORRAS

  • Considered a liberator of South America
  • Fought for Venezuela
  • Was from Argentina
  • Retries to allow Bolivar to lead the revolution of Peru

CAUSES

  • Venezuela didn't liked to be governed by another country
  • The French Revolution
  • Social discomfort
  • Napoleons invasion of Spain
  • Bolivars knowledge of the Enlightenment ideas
  • They couldn't sell their products on the external market

FOREIGN INTERVENTION

  • USA and part of Europe helped Venezuela
  • Haiti sent aid, but Venezuela needed to abolish slavery
  • People that were part of the Napoleonic and German wars, were an important part of the independence war

WAR EFECTS

  • Half of the Venezuela's white population was killed
  • Republic was set up on July 5th in 1811
  • New constitution established; freedom of press and liberation of slaves
  • Venezuela help other parts of South America in their independences
  • Political instability
