VENUS

MARYBETH STANZIOLA, AMANDA KAISER, BRYCE WOZNAK, AND LEXI DRONZKOWSKI

BASIC INFORMATION

  • Venus is the second planet closest to the sun
  • It's commonly referred to as Earth's "sister planet" because of its similarity in size and basic characteristics
  • Named after the Greek god of love, the equivalent to the Roman goddess of love and beauty

CHARACTERISTICS

  • A day on Venus is 243 earth days (longer than its year)
  • Its reddish-orange appearance in pictures isn't actually the color of the surface of the planet, it's just the thick clouds of sulfuric acid that make up its atmosphere
  • Venus rotates counter-clockwise and it is the slowest rotating planet

VENUS'S SURFACE

  • The temperature of venus's surface is 863.3 degrees Fahrenheit, which is hot enough to melt lead
  • The surface is covered in craters and volcanoes that have been inactive for millions of years!

VENUS'S ATMOSPHERE

  • Venus's atmosphere would crush a person, as it is 92x thicker than Earth's
  • The atmosphere is so thick that it's nearly impossible to take pictures of venus's surface

WHAT MAKES UP VENUS'S ATMOSPHERE

  • Carbon dioxide & sulfuric acid (96%)
  • Nitrogen (3.5%)
  • Carbon monoxide, argon, and water vapor (less than 1%)

This reddish-orange coloration comes from the thick clouds of sulfuric acid and carbon dioxide that make up the atmosphere

SATELLITES

  • Venus has no known satellites, although scientists believe Venus may have had at least one at some point in the past

VENUS COMPARED TO EARTH

  • Venus's rotation is 243 days, while Earth's is 24 hours
  • Venus's gravity (8.87m/s^2) is 90% of Earth's (9.8m/s^2)
  • Venus's revolution is 224 days, while Earth's is 365.25
  • Venus's diameter is 12,000km, while Earth's is 12,742km
  • Venus's mass is 5.97x10^24kg, while Earth's is 4.78x10^24kg, this is about 82% of the mass of earth

POSSIBLE LIFE

  • It isn't possible for life to exist on Venus in any form. Since the planet is trapped under clouds of sulfuric acid and carbon dioxide and the surface temperature is over 800 degrees Fahrenheit, it would be impossible for any living organisms to exist.

INTERESTING FACTS

  • Venus is the second brightest object in the sky
  • Venus rotates backwards compared to the other planets
  • It had active volcanoes
  • Many believe that the temperature is so sweltering on the surface because the greenhouse effect is trapping the sun's heat under the atmosphere
  • It's the hottest planet in our solar system
