TYPE ONE

TYPE ONE

  • Verb + ing
  • Verbs expressing a preference are followed by -ing
  • Like, love, adore, enjoy, dislike, hate, detest, can’t stand, prefer, don’t mind and also start, stop, begin, finish, or suggest, admit, deny, avoid, consider, practiced, risk, involve, imagine;
  • Verbs and prepositions are followed by -ing
  • Succeed in, think of, think about, look forward to, insist on, apologize for, be interested in, be good at, be bad at

EXAMPLES

  • Mark prefers listening to music to reading
  • When did you start doing yoga?
  • We suggested going to the beach
  • Are you interested in joining the army?

VERB + INFINITIVE

  • Common verbs followed by infinitive include:
  • Afford, agreed, choose, decide, expect, help, hope, learn, manage, mean, need, promise, refuse, want
  • Some take an object before the infinitive: allow, ask, encourage, expect, help, invite, tell, want;
  • Also would like, would love, would prefer, would hate are followed by an infinitive

all modal verbs and make, let, help

  • Would you like a drink?
  • you mustn't wear shoes in here
  • make, let, help+ obj+base form
  • the instructor made us run for half an hour
  • they let us use the equipment

TYPE THREE

  • All modals are followed by base form - will, would, shall, should, must, can, could;
  • Make, let, help are followed by an object and base form

TRY

  • Try+ ing- do st as an experiment
  • Try+ Infinitive - attempt, make an effort
  • I tried taking an aspirin but it did not work
  • I tried to speak to the head teacher but she was busy

STOP

  • Stop+ ing-give up stop forever
  • Stop + infinitive- take a break from an activity
  • I’ve stopped smoking
  • I was jogging in the park but I met a friend and I stopped to talk to her

REGRET

  • Regret + ing - feel sorry about a past action
  • Regret + infinitive- announce bad news
  • My sister regrets inviting our cousin to her birthday party
  • We regret to inform you that you have failed the exam

REMEMBER

  • Remember +ing- recall a past action or event
  • Remember + infinitive - not forget
  • I remember putting my book in my bag so it should be there!
  • Remember to phone your grand dad, it’s his birthday today!
