What is a verbal?

Verbals are verb parts functioning as nouns, adjectives, or adverbs.

Three types of verbals

  • Infinitive
  • Past Participle
  • Present Participle

Infinitive

  • to + verb
  • noun: To eat now is inconvenient.
  • Adjective or adverb: Still,we have far to go.
  • Infinitive- a verb's SIMPLE or BASE form. 

Participles

A word formed from a verb and used as an adjective or noun.

Past Participle

  • -ed form of regular verb or equivalent in irregular verb.
  • regular: Boiled, filtered water is safe.
  • irregular: eat, eaten; bend, bent; think, thought.
  • A little thought before action is always helpful.

Present Participle

  • A verb's -ing form can function as a noun.
  • Noun: Eating in diners on the road is an adventure.
  • adjective: Running water may not be safe.
  • Think of 3 sentences using present participles.
