HOW WAS THE VICTORIAN ERA FAMILY LIFE?

  • The father usually ruled the house.
  • Victorian parents demanded obedience and respect from their children.
  • For the first time there were toys and book specifically for children.
  • For the first time ever in many middle class homes children were treated as they were children.
  • Children were excepted to do as they were told and couldn't talk back.

HOW WERE VICTORIAN ERA HOUSES?

  • Houses in the Victorian era were built during the reign of Queen Victorian.(1837-1901).
  • Houses styles changed as the years past. There were gothic revival styles in the 1880's and many more styles came and went.
  • Most of the houses that are in Great Britain now were built in the Victorian era. ( cool right!)
  • Victorian houses were often very small and there were also many back-to-back houses that were built in cramped places.
  • There were very few houses with all the basic necessities such as hot and cold, sanitation and lighting.

WHAT DID THE VICTORIAN'S EAT?

  • The poor had very little to eat, they mostly ate potatoes, bread and cheese(and it even got to rotten vegetables).
  • The middle class had a good amount to eat ,they ate a lot of different food such as eggs, bacon, ham , coffee and fruit.
  • The rich had a lot to eat. The rich used meal time to show off their wealth. They had many courses for their meals.
  • The basic foods for all Victorians were mutton, pork, bacon, eggs, bread, potatoes, rice , milk, flour, sugar, jam and tea.
  • The habit of afternoon tea was invented by the Victorians

HOW DID THE VICTORIAN'S GET MARRIED?

  • The brides back then were quite superstitious. So they were careful all the time about their marriage.
  • The reasonable age to get married back then was 17 years old. But some even got married before that.
  • The reasonable time to get married in the late 1880's was 3:00pm. But before that the couple had to get married in the morning.
  • The brides actually sort of got to choose their own groom.
  • After their wedding they went on a honeymoon. The bride had to take another maiden who was not married with her.

HOW WAS THE VICTORIAN ERA CHRISTMAS CELEBRATED?

  • Before the Victorian era Christmas was barely celebrated.
  • Most gifts were planned several months before, and were usually handmade and not store bought .
  • Christmas trees were originated from Germany.
  • The main reasons for Christmas were gift giving and spending time with your friends and family.
  • Tom smith was the one who invented Christmas crackers.

HOW DID VICTORIAN ERA PARENTS NAME THEIR CHILDREN?

  • People who had long names their names were shortened to nicknames, for example if your name was Abigail you were sometimes called Abby.
  • Some of the names people used to name their children back then are not used now, like the name Vertiline.
  • Some people believed that if they name their children a different and unique an me their children would have a good career.
  • There were some people that asked an elder to name their child and bless them for a long life.
  • Sometimes people were so superstitious that they only named their child according to the month their child was born in.

HOW WAS VICTORIAN ERA RELIGIONS AND MORALITY?

  • Not all people believed in their own religions. They did not all live up to their standards.
  • There were dissenter groups that were important on pushing through all kinds of social reforms.
  • There was also a group called the Evangelicals who dominated the British religion from the last decade of the eighteenth century through to the 1880's.
  • Many Victorians insisted upon "plain preaching", which meant preaching with simplicity and clarity.
  • This era was also called the "golden age". Many people traveled long distances to hear famous ministers.

HOW MUCH DID THE PEOPLE IN THE VICTORIAN ERA EARN?

  • A shoe maker or printer could earn $4-6 a week.
  • A cabinet maker could earn $5 a week.
  • Textile workers could earn $6.50(m) $3.50(f) a week
  • Unskilled labourers ( estimated at 2/3 of the workforce) could earn only $1 a week
  • These were really surprising wages when we first saw this.

HOW DID PEOPLE IN THE VICTORIAN ERA TRAVEL?

  • People travelled in carriages to get somewhere a little far. Or sometimes they just walked.
  • Trains were invented back then but not many people used them except for the rich.
  • There were also used to be bicycles but they were different from the ones there are today.
  • The rich mostly only used carriages but the poor always travelled by foot.
  • Cars were not invented back then so no one used the.
