THE FALL OF SAIGON

  • Saigon: capital of South Vietnam
  • Fell April 1975

GULF OF TONKIN RESOLUTION

  • August 1964
  • Stated that Congress supports any military decision that protects safety
  • Allowed military to make more drastic decisions
  • Allowed further fighting in Vietnam

MY LAI MASSACRE

  • March 16, 1968
  • My Lai: Vietnam village of about 700
  • American soldiers killed about 350 people

NGO DINH DIEM ASSASSINATED

  • November 2, 1963
  • Ngo Dinh Diem: president of South Vietnam
  • His government was overthrown

War Powers Act

• Passed in 1973
• Puts limits on the ability of the President to send American troops into combat areas without Congressional approval
• But did not specify what Congress can do if the President refuses to comply with the act


OPERATION ROLLING THUNDER

  • February 1965
  • Was the American sustained bombing campaign against North Vietnam
  • Ended up being a fail for both sides

KENT STATE INCIDENT

  • May 1970
  • Kent State University
  • The Ohio National Guard killed 4 & wounded 9 students
  • Had a direct impact on national politics
